Over 2,000 Pack Mayor’s 25th Annual Ramadan Iftar

Houston: A mammoth gathering on Sunday, March 17, at the Bayou City Center in Houston of over 2,000 persons made it again the largest Iftar Dinner event in the United States.

The Silver Jubilee of America’s largest Annual Houston Iftar Dinner has  been organized for the past many years by the Muslim Sister Cities of Houston, namely Abu Dhabi, Baku, Basrah, Istanbul, and Karachi; along with 40 collaborating community organizations including the Ismaili Council for the Southwest US.

Event emcee attorney Lema Mousilli welcomed the guests and opened the occasion which began with the National Anthem sung by Shama Tajani. Iftar dinner chief coordinator for the past fourteen years, Muhammad Saeed Sheikh, warmly recognized many distinguished guests and expressed his gratitude to Chief Patron Syed Javaid Anwar and Tanweer Ahmed for being the major sponsors of the event. He paid tribute to the organizing committee, collaborating organizations and media. Faisal Momin, President of Ismaili Council then introduced newly elected Mayor John Whitmire.

Keeping his composure, Whitmire said he felt the pain of the people of Gaza, but that his priority was the affairs of Houston, and he did not involve himself in international affairs. He recalled how he first met Muslims when he was a student in college and his commitment to keep the Muslim community feel safe. 

He was followed by prominent Arab American Community leader Ahmed Alyasin who spoke of the suffering of humanity around the world, especially in Gaza. Congressman Al Green called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and for the recognition of Palestine as an independent state. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee met and greet the organizers and guests. Texas Governor Greg Abbott sent a video message of Ramadan greetings.

In conclusion, a powerful message was delivered by Islamic scholar Kemal Civelek of the Islamic Institute highlighting the “Significance of Ramadan” as a month about inculcating self-control to achieve God consciousness. He spoke about societies losing their moral campus and supplicated for the whole world as it is suffering difficulties on Muslims, especially in Gaza. Fatih Bayar closed the presentations with the Aadhan or call to prayer with which people broke their fast and many rushed over to the dinner buffet tables on both sides of the hall.

Also in attendance were several City Council members including Edward Pollard; diplomats of several countries including Ambassador Khazar Ibrahim of Azerbaijan; and representatives of the Sister Cities of Houston including Houston President Susan Young; President of Abu Dhabi Sister City Jamal Bafagih, Orhan Osman of Houston Istanbul Sister City Association. Community leaders from several nationalities from around the world attended the Iftar dinner.

Stage management was coordinated by Shah Haleem, Siraj Narsi and Donya ZItaksari. Dinner was catered by Fadi’s restaurant and Tempura restaurant and Sweet Factory.

The largest Iftar in the United States, Houston Iftar 2024- 25th Annual Ramadan Dinner with the Mayor of Houston was hosted by Abu Dhabi, Baku, Basrah, Istanbul & Karachi Sister City Associations along with The Ismaili Council for southwest US  & 40 plus Collaborating Organizations on Sunday March 17, 2024, at the Bayou City Event Center.The organizing Committee along with 2000 plus guests welcomed the Mayor John Whitmire, Congressman Al Green, Congresswoman Sheila Jackson and over 23 diplomats, Community leaders and Media.The event was very generously Sponsored by Syed Javaid Anwar, Tanweer Ahmed & several others.

Texas Winter Storm:

Organized a Community Collaborative “Mega food / merchandize Drive Thru” benefited over 10,000 Houstonian.

Other International Humanitarian efforts which created strong impact towards the Generosity of Houston Community and Goodwill:

2022 Pakistan Floods $ 2 Million Relief Efforts, 2013 Earthquake Relief Efforts in Pakistan, Karachi Rains Floods Relief 2020-2023, Rehabilitate & Furnish flooded Schools, Thar Drought Recuperation Program.

After historic devastation, the 2022 Pakistan Floods Relief Efforts, a 40 plus Community Collaborative raised $ 2 Million in Cash and in kind, under which over more than 50 relief efforts were organized, which includes Medical Camps, Grocery Distribution, tents, Hygiene Kits, benefitted over 100,000 people and building of 155 homes in all over Pakistan. In addition, shipped Several winter related clothing & daily uses household items and Medical Supplies Containers.

HKSCA ENVIORMENTAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

Annual Trees Plantation Drive:

HKSCA joined in a collaboration with our long-lasting leading Pakistan listed International Non-Governmental Organization (INGO) and US registered partner 501 (c) (3) humanitarian NGO named Helping Hand for Relief & Development (HHRD), who at this time, have around 500 Orphans in Karachi.

HKSCA collaborative effort started in 2022 with the Inauguration of Tree Plantation Drive at the Consulate of USA in Karachi. Every year in Pakistan, HHRD’s Shining Stars of the Orphan Support Program (OSP) plant around 10,000 trees; including about 1,000 in Karachi.

That year the original plan was to again plant 10,000 trees in Pakistan, and the Inauguration of Tree Plantation Drive at the Consulate of USA in Karachi. Every year in Pakistan, HHRD’s Shining Stars of the Orphan Support Program (OSP) plant around 10,000 trees; including about 1,000 in Karachi.

In 2022 original plan was to again plough 10,000 trees in Pakistan, but later the Children with Disabilities (CWDP); and Skills Development & Livelihood Program (SDLP) has joined the efforts, to make it a 20,000 Tree Plantation effort.

HKSC is collaborative partner of HHRD in this Tree Plantation effort.

Honorable Consul General Mark Stroh of United States in Karachi most graciously accepted to kick start this effort, by planting trees in the Consulate premises on Friday, February 4th, 2021. Present on the occasion were Hon Consul General Mark Stroh; Hon Karachi Administrator Barrister Murtaza Wahab; Hon Special Assistant to Chief Minister of Sindh Arooba Rashid Rabbani; the President of HKSCA Muhammad Saeed Sheikh; Director of Programs of HHRD iLyas Hasan Choudry; and respectable staff of the Consulate.

HKSCA is partnering with HHRD on annual basis to plant these trees to increase their coverage and mitigate the impacts of climate change and the Effort continued in 2023 with another mega over 10,000 Tree Plantation Drive Inaugurated by Commissioner of Karachi.

2024 Tree Plantation is already launched.

“JCA, Helping Hands Pakistan & Houston Karachi Sister City Association collaborating to launch a long-term cricketer’s development program”

Background: Pakistan is a country of youths with exceptionally large pool of talent in every field, one of them is sports. Cricket can be taken as a professional career by men and women alike. Cricket is not only monetarily beneficial but also builds individual characters, behaviors and teaches ethics for life. Cricket being lovable yet relatively expansive game to play is almost out of reach of boys and girls of underprivileged areas of Pakistan and thus a lot of talent got wasted.

Program Summary: “JCA, Helping Hands Pakistan & Houston Karachi Sister City Association collaborating to launch a long-term cricketer’s development program. The program will be available for boys and girls of14 -16 age groups selected by a team of professionals conducting talent hunt activity in underprivileged areas of Karachi. Following are the core objectives of the program:

  • Develop physical, mental, and behavioral strengths during cricket coaching ∙ Coach and train the selected lot for cricketing skills and game techniques.
  • Monitor and record progress of trainees and improve at least 20% of the lot to be a junior level regional / provincial level player.
  • During the program, trainees will also be exposed to values like ethics for life, good moral character, discipline, benefits of hard work, progressive and positive thinking and many other skills that require being successful in life. 3 Program Scope

by the super floods and heat waves.

In 2016 HKSCA started water projects with HHRD with its first RO Plant which is in Block L, North Nazimabad, Karachi, and is well maintained and in operation.

Following years several Reverse Osmosis Water Purification System were installed at much needed communities in Karachi.

Masood lauds Pakistani US community’s social activities

 

Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States Masood Khan has said that welfare activities of the Pakistani American community play a key role in highlighting the real identity of the country and strengthening Pakistan-US relations.

Talking to Pakistani social figure of Houston, Muhammad Saeed Sheikh, he said Pakistani community in US is not only playing an important role in strengthening Pakistan-US relations, but is also contributing to development process of Pakistan.

Muhammad Saeed Sheikh is the President of Karachi Houston Sister City Association and has been active in philanthropic activities for many years.

While briefing the Ambassador regarding welfare activities, he said that he collected one million dollars for the flood victims of Pakistan with help of 40 other organizations including Helping Hand, Alliance for Disaster Relief and as a result 65,000 flood victims were provided relief in different shapes.

Masood Khan appreciated his efforts regarding charity activities and said Pakistani community living in US stands with brothers and sisters of the country in every difficult time.

The Pakistani diaspora has dispatched relief items for the flood victims

HOUSTEN: The Pakistani diaspora has dispatched relief items for the flood victims for the second consecutive year amid the prevailing economic crisis.

In the presence of Consul General of Pakistan Aftab Chaudhry, the State of Texas Representative Dr Suleman Lalani, Austin American Pakistani community leader Tariq Majeed and former test cricketer Jalaluddin dispatched a 40-feet large container of brand-new items including winter provisions, household items and others to Pakistan on August 5.

The relief goods were sent under the Alliance for Disaster Relief (AFDR), Helping Hands USA, Houston Karachi Sister City and Association.

These items will be distributed to the flood victims in several parts of Pakistan, as the country is reeling from climate change effects and economic downtrends.

“It is heartening to see Pakistani diaspora always coming forward to sincerely assist fellow country persons in dire needs having hit by natural calamities,” Consul General Chaudhry said.

On the occasion, a special State of Texas Certificate of Recognition for the philanthropic endeavours of AFDR was given by Dr Suleman Lalani to President Muhammad Saeed Sheikh and Board Member Dr Yaqub Sheikh.

“With the facilitation by our implementing partner Helping Hand for Relief and Development (HHRD), the AFDR provided immediate relief to more than 65,000 Pakistanis hit by the super floods of 2022 and is presently constructing 155 homes for those, whose homes were destroyed by the floods.

Through the philanthropy of Patron-in-Chief of AFDR Syed Javed Anwar of Midland, Entrepreneur Tanweer Ahmed of Houston, Tariq Majeed of Austin, and several hundred others, the AFDR was able to raise $1 million cash and $1 million in kind to send help in 2022 and early 2023, and now again has launched the Super Floods 2023 Recuperation Efforts with the sending of this container,” Coordinator of AFDR Muhammad Saeed Sheikh said.

Director Development HHRD Ilyas Hasan Choudry talked about the importance of the brand new relief items in the container that in fact have developmental value, and informed that they had launched a $15 cash campaign for Pakistan floods for 2022-2023, and 85% of the target had been achieved.

HHRD is presently constructing 621 homes for those affected by the floods of 2022 and started the relief efforts for those affected by floods in Pakistan this year.

HHRD is supporting 10,000 orphans, 1,600 children with disabilities, 18 skills development and livelihood centres, doing more than 700 water projects, and much more with a budget of $17 million for the year 2023.

Tariq Majeed of Austin, Dr Yaqub Sheikh of AFDR Houston, and Shah Haleem of Bangladesh Association also spoke on this occasion.

The event was attended by several prominent Community leaders including Saad Ansari, Akhtar Abdullah, Siraj Narsi, Mehmood Ahmed, Rehman Patel, Mehmood Marfani and others.
